Climbing Mount Nyiragongo, mountain gorilla tracking and Lake Kivu combination of Rwanda and DR Congo

5 days Climbing Mount Nyiragongo, mountain gorilla tracking and Lake Kivu combination of Rwanda and DR Congo

In 2014 Virungas National Park authorities announced that the route to climb Mount Nyiragongo has been re-opened for tourism. Mount Nyiragongo is a spectacular stratovolcano that hosts one of the worlds largest and rarest lava lakes, making it one of Africa’s most exciting and rewarding hiking experiences.

Lava lakes are without a doubt one of the most impressive forms of volcanic activity that any outdoors enthusiast could hope to witness. Once you have reached the summit on your Mount Nyiragongo climb, you will be able to observe its bubbling lava cauldron (from a safe distance) and feel this volcano’s energy, as it heaves and breathes. An overnight stay at Mount Nyiragongo’s crater edge will allow you to enjoy this spectacle in the dark, but also at dawn and dusk when its alluring beauty is enhanced.

Mount Nyiragongo, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo rises majestically to an altitude of 3470m overlooking the Virungas National Park and associated Albertine Rift valley. The climb up Mount Nyiragongo is not technically difficult and reaching the top should not take longer than 5 hours.

To further ensure an unforgettable experience this tour includes a mountain gorilla trekking experience in the neighbouring Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Coming face to face with mountain gorillas is a hugely primal and humbling experience, if not life-changing.

Between these two walking adventures you will also enjoy a short and relaxing visit to the idyllic shores of Lake Kivu.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, met our representative and whisked off to enjoy some of Kigali’s main attractions. Depending on your arrival time the following sites may be incorporated into your visit: The Caplaki Handicrafts Market (the perfect place to browse for Rwandan souvenirs), the Kimironko City Market where all types of colourful and tasty food is sold, or the Gisozi Genocide Memorial & Education Centre, the site that houses over 250 000 victims of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide and stands as a vivid testimony to the courage and reconciliatory efforts of the Rwandan people.

After a light lunch in Kigali restaurant you will drive north towards Ruhengeri and on arrival at Volcanoes National Park you will settle in at Hotel Muhabura. Here you will have the chance to freshen up, explore your surroundings and later indulge in a delicious home-cooked dinner at the lodge’s restaurant before your gorilla trekking experience the following day.

Overnight at Hotel Muhabura

Day 2: Mountain gorilla trekking at Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast we take a short drive to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters and meet with the local rangers that shall lead your mountain gorilla trekking experience. An informative talk on etiquette required for gorilla trekking will precede the actual walk, Once the gorilla trekking groups/family are formed you will start your climb towards the different territories and areas in the mountains where your allocated mountain gorilla family/group resides. Gorilla trekking can take between 2 and 7 hours and you could climb to altitudes in excess of 2 350m (7 500 feet).

Although the climb can be physically demanding the beauty of the forest and surrounding scenery always makes the trekking a worthwhile experience. Once the gorillas are located all fatigue is forgotten.

Looking deep into the expressive brown eyes of mountain gorillas is surely the most exciting and poignant wildlife encounter that Uganda, Rwanda, DR Congo and Africa has on offer – and arguably one of the most profound natural history experiences in the world.

When the group returns from the hills a transfer will take you to the mellow lakeside town of Gisenyi where you will check into the Paradis Malahide Hotel for a delicious lunch, well-earned shower and rest. No activities have been planned for this afternoon, in order to allow all participants to decide whether they want to rest before tomorrow’s assault on Mount Nyiragongo, or enjoy a leisurely swim in Lake Kivu.

Dinner and overnight at Paradis Malahide Hotel

Day 3: Climbing Mount Nyiragongo

After an early wake-up call, breakfast and a swift transfer to the Rwanda/Congo border post, you will cross into the Democratic Republic of Congo and drive on towards the Kibati patrol post at the base of Mount Nyiragongo, a mere 50km outside Goma.

After a safety debrief and final check of everyone’s packs and equipment you begin the climb towards Mount Nyiragongo’s summit. The party will be lead and escorted by a set of rangers/guides and a small contingent of porters.

For the first two hours of the walk you will traverse a lush pristine forest, where towering trees offer a welcome shelter from the sun until you emerge from the forest onto a small plateau with commanding views that stretch towards the infinite horizon, with Lake Kivu, Bukavu, Rwanda and Burundi at your feet. You are now standing on the lava flow remnants of Mount Nyiragongo’s 2002 eruption.

From here on, the climbing trail becomes firmer and the forest gives way to several swathes of recovering heath with vegetation dominated by ferns, sedges, heather and everlastings. Shortly after noon, you will reach Mount Nyiragongo’s crater and your overnight cabins.

The remainder of the afternoon will be spent exploring the craters edge and soaking in the surrounding views and Mount Nyiragongos’ bewitching lava cauldron. Fortunately your guides know exactly how to reach the best observation and photogenic spots safely.

When everyone has had enough, the party will return to camp to settle into their cabins, rest and enjoy an early supper, At 18h00 you will return to a designated spot at the craters edge to gaze and appreciate again Mount Nyiragongo’s molten lava lake. In the dark of night one is able to appreciate better the dark crusty surface of lava, spliced and splitting into ever changing plates. As the plates separate, bright orange lava fill the cracks and a fantastic spider-web pattern emerges. Every now and then fountains of lava flare up disrupting these pretty patterns, but adding a surge of dynamism and power to this spectacular sight. Sometimes, fountains appear throughout the crust like a collection of campfires, creating yet another fascinating show, As you return to your cabins on Mount Nyiragongo, the lights of Goma glow below, a reminder of what’s in store for the following day.

Day 4: Descent from Mount Nyiragongo, short visit of Goma and cross over to Gisenyi (Rwanda)

After a rather early cup of tea/coffee, you will be summoned back to the crater’s rim at dawn for one last peek. Wrapped in warm clothing you greet the new day as the intense red and yellow glow of the lava below mixes with a backdrop of blue and indigo skies.

After breakfast, the party will commence its descent from to Kibati. The descent generally takes 2-3 hours. Back at Kibati, your transport will be waiting to take you back to Goma for lunch and a short tour of the town before crossing back into Rwanda to check into a Gisenyi hotel, for a well deserved shower, rest and scrumptious farewell dinner.

Overnight at Paradis Malahide Hotel

Day 5: Drive back to Kigali transfer to airport and departure Rwanda

After breakfast, you will be transferred back to Kigali Airport for your home bound flight connection.

Accommodation: You will spend one night at Hotel Muhabura: Muhabura Hotel is found opposite the Musanze District headquarters on your way out of town on the main road to Rubavu (Gisenyi). You will be staying in an en-suite room with warm shower, Wifi and satellite TV.

Paradis Malahide: This lodge is located 7km outside Gisenyi, at a beautiful location on the shores of Lake Kivu, with lovely views across to the islands. The bungalows and the main dining/reception areas are surrounded by well-manicured and colourful gardens. A small section of public and private beaches allow visitors to fully enjoy Lake Kivu. All en-suite bungalows are cool and comfortable with a double bed, mosquito netting, bamboo chairs and a small table, as well as a wardrobe. It is a perfectly integrated, charmingly rustic, simple lodge that is enthusiastically run, and offers great food.

Mount Nyiragongo Cabins: These cabins are relatively new (2011), built on the edge of the volcanoe’s crater, wooden, en-suite, spacious and endowed with two beds each. They are rustic, practical and comfortable.

Fitness: A basic level of fitness is required for trekking mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. Climbing Mount Nyiragongo in Virungas National Park requires a reasonable-good level of fitness and basic hiking experience. Summiting Mount Nyiragongo involves a 4-6 hour uphill climb often on uneven volcanic rock, muddy tracks and slippery trails. It is however not particularly steep. The pace of both trekking experiences will be set and determined by professional trekking guides who always ensure that everyone reaches the targeted troop/camp. To make your experience even more enjoyable, porters that can carry your bag (max.15kg), will be available for hire at Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) and have been pre-arranged at the Kibati Patrol Post in Virungas National Park DR Congo.

.

Security: Many of the structures required to run Africa’s oldest national park have been restored by the tireless efforts of hard working rangers and staff of the Virungas National Park. These included the cabins and shelters at the craters’ rim – a heroic feat when one considers that every single piece of building material had to be lugged on foot to an altitude of 3,400 m. The work done by the people involved in rebuilding and protecting the parks assets, as well as those that to date ensure a safe passage and stay at this national park, is nothing short of heroic and well worth rewarding with one’s presence!

Included: Transfers to and from the airport in Kigali on arrival and departure days. Transport in a 4WD vehicle for the entirety of this tour, including fuel. Services of an English speaking tour guide /driver. Four night’s accommodation on full board. All meals mentioned in the itinerary. The tour package starts with many lifelong dream of trekking gorillas in Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda. This Rwanda gorillas and Rwanda Chimps tour is primarily for visitors making trips to Rwanda and wish to exclusive trek Rwanda's primates in Nyungwe and Rwanda's mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. Primate lovers will have a memorable experience visiting Kibale National Park as 13 primates species can be seen, as well as different types of monkeys. The star and biggest attraction to the Kibale Forest Nature walk however is undoubtedly the chimpanzees. The chance of locating chimps at Kibale National Park is 90% high when compared to other places including Kyambura Gorge or Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda. The success rate is extremely high as there is a very high concentration and high population density of chimps in Kibale National Park with large chimp numbers in each troop. Planning a Gorilla Trekking/tracking in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo what to consider, How to plan your 2016/2017 gorilla tracking program, transport to Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mghinga Gorilla National Park, Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and DR Congo’s Virunga National Park, accommodation, how to book the gorilla permits, cost of the gorilla tour for 2016/2017

In Uganda Gorilla tracking can only either be done in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, in Rwanda Gorilla trekking can be done only in Volcanoes National Park and in DR Congo its done in Virunga National Park. However those the only National Parks where you can find the few remaining mountain gorillas in the world

To trek gorillas you must have a pre-booked gorilla trekking permit in Uganda each costs USD$600 in Rwanda each cost USD750 and DR Congo but Uganda has introduces specially discounted gorilla permits in the month of March April, May and November 2016/2017 to $450 . Since the gorilla parks are located far away from the airport you arrive from you will need transport (4x4 advisable) to reach the park. The drive from Kampala/ Entebbe to Bwindi takes about 8-9 hours. This means that if you are tracking gorillas in Uganda you will need at least 3 days to the gorilla trek: One day travelling to the park, another day tracking the gorilla, and the third day driving back to Kampala or Entebbe.

How to book your gorilla permit, you will need to either contact the relevant travel agency to book the gorilla permit Uganda Wildlife Authority for Uganda, RDB for Rwanda and UNESCO for DR Congo or book your permits through a local tour Company like us www.kisorotoursuganda.com or www.gorilla-tracking-uganda-rwanda.com Please note that gorilla permits are only confirmed by paying for them in full. You will need to send money for the permits in full to get your confirmation ad ensure that you take care of the bank charges involved to avoid disappointment.

If you intend to travel in high season like June, July August and December 2016/2017, be aware that most days are sold out and you may not be able to get the gorilla permit for the days you wish to travel. There are however some gorilla permits cancellations. These permits are not at the Uganda Wildlife Authority but with local tour agents. Which we can assist our clients to get such permits when contacted.

However, for the rest of 2016-2017, there are still plenty of spaces so you can confidently contact us now to book your space there.

If you arrange the gorilla permit on your own, please ensure that you pick it from the booking office in Kampala before travelling to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mghinga Gorilla National Park. You must present your gorilla permit and passport on the gorilla tracking day to be allowed on the gorilla trek. In case your permit is booked through a tour agent and you are taking the tour with them you may not necessarily need to think about getting the permit from them but if you are not taking the full gorilla tour with them, consider getting your permit before travelling to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mghinga Gorilla National Park.

Planning your Transport to the Gorilla Trek in Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo:

You will require a 4x4 vehicle to go to the gorilla in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mghinga Gorilla National Park, Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and DR Congo’s Virunga National Park . You need a 4x4 vehicle to navigate the rough pot-holed roads which often get tourists stuck for hours during rainy seasons. You may be able to hire a vehicle for US$150 per day including vehicle, fuel, guide/driver and allowances costs for the guide/driver. Alternatively you may take public buses to a nearby town but you will have to find a cab (preferably 4x4 and which will costs you $100 a day without gas fuel) to ferry you to the Park and to the hotel.

You have to report to the park for registration office at 7:30AM. So whatever method you choose, make sure that it is reliable, if you don’t turn up at the appointed time you risk invalidating your gorilla tracking permit and having to pay again. The gorilla tracking time is very unpredictable and you may as well take from 2-9 hours. So have your accommodation booked for the night after your trek as well. For this same reason also have with you a packed lunch for the day, plenty of drinking water, rainproof clothing (you are trekking through a rainforest and any time it can rain).

Planning Your Accommodation during your Gorilla Trek tour

In Uganda, the accommodation you choose will depend on the gorilla permit you book being that the available 15 gorilla families that tourists visit in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mghinga Gorilla National Park range over a wide area. Please contact us for more details about which accommodation you will need to book for each different gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Hiring Porters and Walking Sticks for the Gorilla Trekking

There are porters for hire (at $15 each) at the park offices and a walking stick is free. Do not overestimate your strength; you may certainly need either or both of these. So consideration to hire one. It’s another way of giving back to the communities.

What is Mountain Gorilla Trekking

What is Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Around the world only 800 mountain gorilla still exist today. Although our closest living relatives, ironically, it is man that poses the greatest threat to their survival. For years gorillas have been ruthlessly hunted for their hands and heads, which are sold on as macabre souvenir ashtrays and lamp shades. Additionally, large numbers have been killed whilst trying to stop poachers stealing babies which are illegally sold on to zoos, where their survival rate is low.

Gorilla trekking is a wonderful experience, allowing you the opportunity to have a close encounter with these gentle giants of the jungle in their natural habitat. The trekking will take place either in Uganda, Rwanda or Democratic Republic of Congo - depending on local conditions and the availability of the gorilla permits. You need not feel that you are exploiting these animals by paying good money to go trek to see them in their natural habitat. In fact the ever-growing number of tourists keen to see the gorilla proves to be an important factor in their survival. The gorilla permit fees help to set up and finance that are instrumental in protecting the gorillas from poachers and their lethal snares.

How Much Gorilla Permit Costs

The cost and availability of gorilla permits varies and depends on which country and park and currently in Uganda it cost USD600, in Rwanda USD750 and DR Congo USD500 You will also need to budget for visa fees costs, transfer and a local service fee approx USD 40-50 and to renew your Ugandan and Rwanda visa upon re-entry should we have to go t DR Congo. The government often increases the permit and transfer costs without notice, so we ask that you budget for the highest amount, so that you don't suddenly have to find additional money to partake in this wonderful experience.

The reason that the permits are so costly is because each park only issues limited permits per gorilla family per day, to ensure that the gorilla’s exposure to humans is limited. 100% of the gorilla permit cost is used by the government to continue in the excellent work they do in protecting and promoting these wonderful animals.

When is the Best time for gorilla trekking/ tracking in Rwanda Uganda and DR Congo2016-2017?

When is the best time to visit/ track or trek the gorillas in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo, Which months should one vist/tracking gorilla in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo, which months are the best for gorilla trekking?

When tracking or trekking mountain gorillas can be done any day any time of the year in either countries where Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo because of the relatively wetter/ rainy seasons in the mountain gorilla inhabited national parks, many tourists often prefer the months from June to September and then December, January and February. In Rwanda and DR Congo, the first rains start coming in late February through March, April and May and so many tourists try to avoid these months for fear of getting muddy and all wet while tracking the gorillas. However, during these months, because of the rains there's plenty of gorilla food down slope and it's much colder on the upper slopes. So the mountain gorillas keep on the lower slopes where they find it warmer and get food easily. So if you track the gorillas during these months, most likely your trek won't be a long one - many trackers find the gorillas after 2 hours hike and by 12PM are back. The same applies to Uganda although the rains there come in March, April and May. Of course the Undeniably the rains (not always heavy though) make it rather harder to trek the steep terrains. Even then, the rain only comes for like 1-2 hours in like every 2-3 days and the sun comes out. We have noticed that even in the so-called drier months, the rain will often come in.

This seasonality of gorilla trackers can also be attributed to the weather seasons in the visitors’ home country and the nature of their jobs. When it is summer for example in Europe, numbers of gorilla trek visitors increase and the gorilla trackers numbers dip when it’s winter. However, there are other gorilla trekkers who often take advantage of the seasonal discounts on mountain gorilla tracking permits. Recently for example, the Uganda Wildlife Authority discounted gorilla permits by 30% for non-resident foreigners. A gorilla permit in Uganda costs $450 for the months of November, March, April and May 2016-2017. The rest of time it is at 600$ . Some Lodges and Hotels facilities in mountain gorilla inhabited areas will also make discounts on their rates during these same months of discounted gorills permits.

The explanation will be the experience shows that mountain gorilla trekking can be done any day any time of the year and you will most likely get the same experience.
